If you’re dreaming about a Key West elopement, you probably already have a few things in mind: warm sunshine, tropical palms, colorful Duval Street, ocean views, and a sunset that looks almost too good to be real. And trust, Key West delivers all of that. But where are the best places to elope in Key West?
But if there’s one thing I want couples to know before choosing their ceremony spot… the best places to elope in Key West are not all beaches. Key West has historic gardens, tropical spaces, iconic architecture, intimate courtyards, and beautiful places where you can create an entire experience around your wedding day. In my opinion, that’s what truly makes Key West such an incredible destination for an elopement! You can genuinely spend so much time here, which is why I’m a firm believer in 8-hour elopement days. Click here if you want to see what an 8 hour elopement actually looks like!
One of my favorite things about planning & photographing Key West elopements is helping couples turn their whimsical elopement ideas into a full day that actually feels like them. Instead of rushing in, getting married, taking a few pictures, and leaving, you can slow down and be genuinely present in the moment.
So if you’re searching for the best places to elope in the US, these five Key West locations deserve a spot on your list. And for couples looking for a photographer who can help turn the location into an entire experience, I own and operate Kindwave Photography, a woman-owned small business specializing in photography and planning support for Florida elopements.

Before we get into the locations, let’s talk about what actually makes a location great for an elopement.
A pretty backdrop is important. Of course it is! But it isn’t everything.
When I help couples decide on their elopement location, I also consider things like privacy, photography opportunities, accessibility, permits, guest count, time of day, weather, and what you can do nearby (which a lot of couples don’t initially consider!).
That’s because the best place to get married in Key West isn’t necessarily the prettiest place on Instagram or Pinterest, it’s the place & experiences that fits the experience you want.
For example, if you want a quiet and intimate morning by the water, a busy beach might not be your best choice, but we could find a local hidden gem to exchange sunrise vows. If you want a beautiful garden with family and friends, a courthouse may feel too urban, but The Garden Club at West Martello Tower would better suit your needs! And if you want an adventurous day with multiple stops, you may not even need to spend your entire day at one venue, but instead fill your day exploring iconic spots.
Key West gives you options, and here are five of my favorites.

If you want your elopement to feel completely different from a traditional beach wedding, the Key West Butterfly Garden is one of the most unique options on my list.
More formally known as the Key West Butterfly & Nature Conservatory, this tropical attraction is home to hundreds of butterflies, colorful birds, tropical plants, and two famous flamingos. With butterflies, nature, and birds, it’s hard to beat that for an elopement backdrop.
The conservatory offers wedding and commitment ceremonies after it closes to the public. Ceremonies are held at 5 p.m. and are designed for intimate groups of around 10 to 20 guests (my specialty!). Couples can also choose to include a butterfly release as part of the experience.
I would love to highlight that the Key West Butterfly Garden is indoors, which makes it a perfect indoor elopement ceremony during Florida’s rainy season.
This is such a fun choice for couples who don’t want their wedding to feel overly traditional.
Instead of standing in front of an arch on the beach, you’re surrounded by a living tropical environment. Butterflies can (and will!) literally fly around you while you’re exchanging vows. It’s colorful, playful, romantic, and very Key West.
In addition to the location being indoors, the conservatory itself is climate-controlled, which can also be a huge plus if you’re worried about heat. It is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for regular visitors if you’d like to build it into your elopement timeline as an experience instead of a ceremony spot.
The Butterfly Garden is especially great for couples who:
If you’re looking for a romantic place to elope in Key West that feels whimsical and memorable, this is a strong contender.
And honestly, it would be pretty hard to forget a wedding surrounded by butterflies!

Of course, we have to talk about the beach. Smathers Beach is one of the most recognizable choices for couples who want that classic, tropical elopement experience.
Think soft sand, palm trees, blue water, warm light, and plenty of room to breathe.
If your idea of an elopement is walking barefoot toward your partner with the ocean behind you, Smathers Beach may be exactly what you’re picturing. The City of Key West specifically identifies Smathers Beach as a popular location for beach weddings and requires a permit for wedding ceremonies there, but when you work with me, I help with every step of the permit process, so you don’t have to navigate those .gov websites alone!
The biggest advantage is the scenery, as you don’t need to do much decorating when the ocean is your backdrop. You can keep the ceremony incredibly minimal, and let the sand and sea do the work.
It’s also a great option if you want to spend part of your day exploring other parts of Key West. You can have your ceremony on the beach, and then head into Old Town for portraits, drinks, dinner, a sunset adventure, or whatever you want to do!
There are some important rules to keep in mind, especially with a Smathers Beach elopement.
The City requires a beach wedding permit, and applications should generally be submitted at least 14 business days before the requested date. Current city fees are based on group size, starting at $150 for gatherings of 1–25 people.
There are also restrictions on decorations, alcohol, glass, pets, balloons, confetti, generators, and other items.
And if you’re planning a sunset ceremony, pay special attention to turtle nesting season. From March through October, artificial lighting is restricted after sunset because hatchlings rely on natural darkness to find the ocean.
So yes, Smathers Beach is beautiful and very popular for elopements, but the logistics matter! When you elope with me, logistics help is one of my specialties, and included in every Key West elopement package.
If you want a good place to elope in Key West with that classic tropical look, and eloping by clear blue waters, this is a great option! We’ll just make to keep in mind permit and environmental rules, and prioritize it throughout the planning process.

If you want your wedding day to feel like it belongs in a storybook, the Ernest Hemingway Home is hard to beat.
Located in the heart of Old Town Key West, the Hemingway Home combines history with lush tropical gardens. The property offers dedicated event spaces and is designed to host everything from intimate ceremonies to larger celebrations. And if you didn’t know, the famous Hemingway cats are part of the experience! As someone with two fur babies, I love the potential to see a furry friend on your elopement day.
There is something really special about getting married somewhere that has so much personality!
Again, you aren’t looking at a blank venue that needs tons of decoration, as the tropical gardens already create an atmosphere, the historic architecture adds character, the greenery gives you tons of variety for portraits, and the property feels unmistakably Key West.
The Hemingway Home currently offers intimate elopement reservations with availability primarily Monday through Thursday, with select weekends available. As a born-and-raised Floridian, I do recommend weekday elopements to help beat the weekender crowds. That makes it particularly appealing if you’re planning a smaller destination wedding and want a venue that already has a beautiful, polished feel.
If you’re trying to decide on the best place to get married in Key West, this is one of the locations I would put high on the list for couples who love history and romance.
And if you happen to be a cat person like me? Even better.

If you love gardens but still want the ocean nearby, the Key West Garden Club at West Martello Tower is one of the most beautiful options to consider.
The gardens sit inside the remains of a Civil War-era fort and combine tropical plants, historic architecture, ocean views, and winding garden paths, and it’s such a cool combination for couples! You still get the romance of a garden wedding, without giving up the feeling that you’re on a tropical island.
The Garden Club describes the property as a tropical garden paradise by the sea, with multiple garden areas, historic fort structures, and spaces specifically for weddings and special events.
The variety is a huge advantage. You can have your ceremony surrounded by tropical foliage, near the water, or by one of the garden’s water features. The venue specifically offers several ceremony settings, including by-the-sea and tropical foliage options.
That means your photos don’t all have to look the same, while staying in the same spot! You can move through different parts of the gardens and create a gallery that feels like you visited several locations without actually spending your whole day driving around.
The gardens are open to the public during regular hours, so daytime events have different privacy considerations.
The venue notes that areas cannot be cordoned off for private use during normal public hours. After the gardens close at 5 p.m., the space becomes yours for your event.
That’s a really important detail when planning your timeline! If privacy is a major priority, we will make sure to prioritize an after-hours ceremony. If you don’t mind some visitors nearby, a smaller daytime ceremony can also work into your day.
Daytime or evening time, this is a good place to elope in Key West for couples who want something lush, colorful, historic, and still connected to the ocean, as you can see the water from the space.

Not every couple wants a venue, and that’s completely okay!
Sometimes the best place to get married in Key West is the courthouse. The Monroe County Courthouse at central 500 Whitehead Street is a practical option for couples who want to make things official and spend the rest of their day exploring Key West.
An elopement ceremony doesn’t have to be elaborate to be meaningful. A courthouse ceremony can be the starting point for a much bigger adventure.
You could:
This timeline is still an elopement! In fact, some couples love the courthouse specifically because it gives them more freedom to explore and experience the iconic location you’re eloping in.
One of my favorite ways to approach a courthouse elopement is to build in the ceremony as a starting chapter of the day, instead of the entire story. This helps keep the legal part of eloping simple, and then make everything afterward feel intentional.

So, which location is right for you?
Here’s the quick breakdown.
| Location | Best For | Overall Feel | Biggest Advantage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Key West Butterfly Garden | Nature lovers | Whimsical + unique | Butterflies and tropical setting |
| Smathers Beach | Beach lovers | Tropical + relaxed | Classic ocean backdrop |
| Hemingway Home | History lovers | Romantic + elegant | Historic gardens and character |
| West Martello Garden Club | Garden lovers | Tropical + peaceful | Gardens, fort, and ocean |
| Key West Courthouse | Minimalists | Simple + classic | Easy starting point for an adventure |
There isn’t one universal winner.
The best places to elope in Key West depend on what you want your wedding day to feel like.
Want something playful and totally different? Choose the Butterfly Garden. The classic Florida beach experience? Smathers Beach. History and romance? Hemingway Home. Tropical gardens with a little more privacy and variety? West Martello. Keep the ceremony simple and spend the rest of the day exploring? The courthouse.

When you’re deciding between these locations, ask yourself a few questions.
If privacy is important, look carefully at the venue’s event rules and operating hours. Private venue time can make a huge difference in how relaxed your ceremony feels.
You don’t necessarily have to get married on the beach to have beach photos. This is something I really love about Key West. You can exchange vows somewhere completely different and then incorporate the ocean into your portraits later. That gives you more variety.
Some couples care mostly about beautiful photos, where others want the location itself to be part of the story.
If you’re the second type, think beyond the ceremony.
What will you do afterward? Where will you eat? Do you want to explore? Do you want to take a boat ride? Would you rather spend the day wandering around Old Town? Etc…
These questions can help you find the best place to get married in Key West for you, instead of simply picking the location with the prettiest photos.
Always check. Beach weddings, gardens, private venues, parks, and historic properties can all have different requirements.
For example, Smathers Beach requires a city wedding permit, while private venues such as the Hemingway Home and West Martello have their own event policies and rental structures.
If you’re unsure, this is exactly the kind of thing you want to figure out before booking flights and making plans.

Here’s the thing about Key West.
You don’t have to choose between a beautiful ceremony and an adventurous wedding day. You can have both!
For example:
Morning: Get ready together and have a slow breakfast.
Late morning: First look and portraits around Old Town.
Midday: Explore the island, grab lunch, or visit a favorite spot.
Afternoon: Exchange vows at your chosen location.
Golden hour: Head somewhere scenic for couples portraits.
Evening: Watch the sunset and have a private dinner.
That’s the kind of timeline that turns an elopement into an experience.

There isn’t one perfect month for everyone, but season does matter.
Winter is a popular choice because temperatures are generally more comfortable and humidity tends to be lower. The tradeoff is that winter is also a busy travel season. Spring can offer beautiful weather, but Key West can get busier during popular travel periods. Summer can be hotter and more humid, so early morning or evening timelines can be much more comfortable. Fall can be a great option for couples who want fewer crowds, but you should always keep tropical weather and hurricane-season planning in mind.
No matter when you choose to elope, build a little flexibility into your timeline. The more relaxed your schedule is, the easier it is to handle a weather change, a delayed meal, or a spontaneous stop for ice cream.
And honestly?
Those unexpected moments often become some of your favorite memories.

Key West isn’t just a place to have a wedding ceremony, it’s a place where you can actually experience your wedding day. That’s the difference.
You can start the morning with coffee, get married in a tropical garden, wander through Old Town, stop for Cuban food, take photos by the ocean, and watch the sun disappear over the water.
Your wedding day can feel like a vacation. It can feel like an adventure, it can be quiet, it can be weird, it can be romantic, it can be completely different from what your family expected, and more. And that’s kind of the point of eloping… you can make your wedding day however you want it to look!
If you’re searching for the best places to elope in Key West, don’t just ask yourself, “Where should we get married?”
Ask yourself: “What do we want our wedding day to feel like?”
Once you answer that, choosing the right location becomes so much easier.
Whether that’s butterflies, tropical gardens, sandy beaches, historic architecture, or a simple courthouse ceremony, Key West gives you plenty of ways to create a wedding day that actually feels like yours.

Some of the best places to elope in Key West include the Key West Butterfly Garden, Smathers Beach, the Ernest Hemingway Home, the Garden Club at West Martello Tower, and the Key West Courthouse.
The right choice depends on your guest count, preferred scenery, privacy needs, budget, and the kind of experience you want.
There are several contenders for the title of romantic place to elope in Key West.
For lush tropical scenery and historic charm, the Hemingway Home is a beautiful choice. For ocean views, Smathers Beach is hard to beat. For gardens and a more secluded atmosphere, West Martello is worth considering.
The most romantic location is ultimately the one that fits your relationship and the experience you want to create.
The Hemingway Home, West Martello Garden Club, Key West Butterfly Garden, and Key West Courthouse are all alternatives to a traditional beach ceremony.
These locations also give you more variety if you want your wedding photos to include greenery, architecture, history, or something completely unique.
Yes. The City of Key West requires a permit for wedding ceremonies held in the designated area of Smathers Beach. Current city guidelines also include rules about decorations, alcohol, lighting, pets, balloons, and other items.

The venue offers multiple ceremony settings, including by-the-sea and tropical foliage areas.
The Key West Courthouse is home to the Monroe County Clerk’s Office, which handles marriage licenses. Couples can also arrange courthouse ceremonies and use the courthouse as the legal starting point for a larger Key West elopement experience.
Marriage licenses are handled through the Monroe County Clerk of the Court. The Key West location is at 500 Whitehead Street. Always check the current Clerk’s Office requirements before your trip because legal procedures and fees can change.
Yes. A photographer who regularly works with eloping couples can help you compare locations based on lighting, privacy, photography opportunities, travel time, permits, and your overall vision.
This can be especially helpful if you’ve never visited Key West before.
Absolutely.
In fact, this is one of my favorite ways to approach a Key West elopement.
You could have your ceremony at a garden, courthouse, or beach and then explore several other parts of the island for portraits and experiences afterward.
That means you don’t have to choose just one romantic place to elope in Key West.
You can make the entire island part of your wedding day.
For popular dates and venues, I recommend starting as early as possible.
Private venues can have limited availability, and public locations may have permit requirements. If you have a specific date, photographer, or venue in mind, don’t wait until the last minute to start planning.
Yes!
Key West is especially great for couples who want their wedding to feel like an experience instead of just a ceremony.
You can combine your vows with beaches, gardens, historic sites, food, boat rides, Old Town adventures, and plenty of time together.
That’s why Key West continues to be one of my favorite destination options for couples looking for the best places to elope in Key West.

Your elopement doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s wedding.
Maybe you want to exchange vows surrounded by butterflies, maybe you want your toes in the sand, maybe you want a historic garden, a courthouse ceremony, or a full day exploring the island together.
There isn’t a “wrong” way to do it.
The best location is simply the one that makes you both think, “Yep. This feels like us.” And if you’re still trying to figure out which of these is the best place to get married in Key West for your vision, that’s okay, too.
Start with how you want the day to feel. The location can come next! And if you’re ready to turn your rough draft into a real day, you can start planning your Florida elopement with me here.
