If you’re wondering how to elope in Florida, you’re not alone! More couples than ever are choosing intimate weddings over large traditional celebrations. Florida is one of those hidden gems for elopements. There is SO much more to do here than a quick in-and-out ceremony at a courthouse or on the beach. Florida elopements can offer beautiful sceneries, real adventure, and the freedom to focus on what matters most… your relationship!

Whether you dream of exchanging vows on a white sand beach, a beautiful botanical garden, beneath towering oak trees, or at a historic landmark, eloping in Florida gives you endless possibilities. The Sunshine State combines beautiful weather, easy travel access, and relatively straightforward marriage laws, making it one of the best elopement destinations in the United States.

As a born-and-raised Floridian turned elopement photographer & planner, my 2026 guide covers everything you need to know about how to elope in Florida legally, including marriage license requirements, costs, timelines, location ideas, planning tips, and common mistakes to avoid. Most couples don’t even think of this initially when deciding to elope, so you’re already taking a great step forward!

How to Elope in Florida Legally in 2026

The legal process for eloping in Florida is easier than you expect, especially when you have an expert guiding you along the way when questions pop up (heyyyy!). All of my Florida couples receive a step-by-step guide of the appointment -> application process.

To legally get married in Florida, you’ll need:

  • A valid marriage license (in some counties, options to pre-apply online are available!)
  • A qualified officiant (I help you find a trusted one, especially if you’re out-of-state!)
  • Two people willing to marry each other, I’m assuming you’ve gotten this part done!
  • A signed marriage certificate returned to the county clerk by you, your partner, and officiant

Unlike some states, Florida does not require witnesses for a valid marriage.

Step 1: Apply for a Florida Marriage License

Couples can obtain a marriage license from any Florida county clerk’s office.

Requirements typically include:

  • Valid government-issued photo identification
  • Social Security number (if applicable)
  • Marriage license fee
  • Completion of required forms

Your Florida marriage license is valid statewide, meaning you can obtain it in one county and use it anywhere in Florida. Keep in mind: you do have to return the license to the same county you obtained it from!

For the latest legal requirements, visit the Florida Courts website:
https://www.flcourts.gov

Step 2: Understand the Waiting Period

For Florida residents, there may be a three-day waiting period unless you complete a premarital preparation course.

Non-residents can usually marry immediately after receiving the license.

Because regulations can change, always verify current requirements with your county clerk before your Florida elopement. When you work with me, my priority is making sure your elopement is as smooth as possible. Together, we make sure you’re eloping legally and correctly!

Step 3: Choose an Officiant

Florida law allows several types of officiants, including:

  • Ordained ministers
  • Religious clergy
  • Judges
  • Judicial officers
  • Florida notaries public

Many couples choose a professional elopement officiant who specializes in intimate ceremonies. If you have someone in mind already, amazing! A lot of couples come from out-of-state to elope, since Florida is a great destination elopement spot. If you need recommendations, it is a part of my services to recommend an officiant that reflects your needs!

Step 4: Sign and File the Marriage Certificate

After the ceremony, the officiant completes the marriage certificate and returns it to the county clerk for official recording.

Once processed, you’ll receive certified copies for legal purposes (and fun pictures!). If you want to build applying for & picking up your marriage license in your elopement timeline, you absolutely should. There’s nothing like reflecting on your elopement day years later and seeing the emotions of the day, from start to finish.

Why More Couples Want to Elope in Florida

Eloping in Florida has become increasingly popular because it removes SO MUCH stress associated with traditional weddings.

Instead of spending months coordinating hundreds of guests, couples can focus on creating meaningful experiences together and elope in Florida without all of the added stress. Things I’ve heard from traditional married couples? They weren’t able to feel present for their day, they were a part of the chaos, their day felt more like a performance for others… and so on. Eloping couples? Best day ever! It truly felt personal and special to us. We could really feel the day.

Some of the biggest benefits of eloping in Florida include:

Lower Overall Costs

Traditional weddings often cost tens of thousands of dollars, with the current average cost for a traditional wedding being $34,200.

Even if you splurge on higher-ticket items like full-day photography and planning, a Florida elopement can often be planned for a fraction of that amount while still providing an incredible experience. Often couples will invest in the things that matter most to them like photography & planning to lift the weight off their shoulders, then DIY other aspects of their elopement like their dress and flowers!

Less Stress

Planning a large wedding can feel overwhelming. Other’s opinions are often, and often contradictory! It can put a lot of stress on a couple who’s goal was to just have a beautiful day to celebrate their love.

Elopements simplify decision-making and allow couples to prioritize what they truly value. Imagine yourself deciding to elope, make the day all about you and your love, without outside pressure. Sounds epic, right?

More Flexibility

Want a sunrise beach ceremony?

Prefer a private garden vow exchange?

Interested in visiting multiple locations in one day?

A Florida elopement offers flexibility that larger weddings rarely provide, and something I’ve considered for my couples who are ready to take the leap! I have built 4, 8, and 12 hour Florida elopement photography & planning packages designed to keep your day iconic, while leaving breathing room for you to feel the day as well.

More Personal Experience

Many couples find their ceremony feels more authentic when it’s focused entirely on them rather than managing guest expectations. Instead of worrying about Aunt May wearing a “champagne” colored dress to your wedding, you can focus on doing something EPIC with your partner. Interested, but you don’t know what an epic elopement would look like for you and your love? 8 hour elopements are my jam! Whether you’re a more introverted or more extroverted couple, there’s a way to craft an all-day experience that feels like you. Learn about what an 8 hour elopement in Florida actually looks like!

These locations are just the beginning. As a Florida local, I know the good elopement spots, the ones you won’t find on Google. Read about some of my favorite underrated elopement locations here!

Beach Elopements

Florida is famous for its coastline.

Popular choices include:

  • Siesta Key (Bonus: if you still want a classic civil ceremony, the Sarasota Courthouse is close by!)

State Parks

Florida’s parks provide incredible natural beauty.

Popular choices include:

  • Honeymoon Island State Park
  • Anastasia State Park
  • Bahia Honda State Park
  • Lovers Key State Park

Many parks require permits for wedding ceremonies, so plan ahead. Luckily, when you work with me, you won’t need to navigate the permit process alone. I’m with you every step of the way, so any questions you have throughout the process can be answered, and you can make decisions with complete confidence!

How to Choose Where to Elope in Florida

Consider the Season

Florida weather varies throughout the year.

Winter (December-February) (My top season for elopements!)

Pros:

  • Comfortable temperatures
  • Lower humidity

Cons:

  • Popular tourist season
  • Higher travel costs

Spring (March-May)

Pros:

  • Excellent weather
  • Beautiful landscapes

Cons:

  • Spring break crowds in some areas, especially beaches

Summer (June-August)

Pros:

  • Vibrant greenery
  • Longer daylight hours

Cons:

  • High heat and humidity
  • Afternoon storms

Fall (September-November)

Pros:

  • Fewer crowds
  • Pleasant temperatures

Cons:

  • Hurricane season considerations

Think About Privacy

Some couples want complete seclusion.

Others enjoy a lively atmosphere.

When planning your Florida elopement, consider:

  • Accessibility
  • Crowd levels
  • Permit requirements
  • Sunrise versus sunset timing

One of the best parts about working with me is that I’m a born-and-raised Floridian! I’ve dealt with tourist crowds and finding those ‘sweet spots’ just about my whole life. When you elope with me, we can find an “off-the-books” spot that will have significantly less crowds then the top online recommendations, and make your elopement feel all the more intimate and special.

How to Elope in Florida and Get Amazing Photos

Photography often becomes one of the most valuable investments in an elopement experience.

Your photographs preserve the emotions, scenery, and memories from the day.

When selecting a photographer:

Look for Elopement Experience

Elopements differ from traditional weddings.

Experienced photographers understand:

  • Permit requirements
  • Location logistics
  • Lighting conditions
  • Weather backup plans

Choose Someone Who Helps with Planning

The best photographers often provide guidance on:

  • Timelines
  • Locations
  • Sunrise and sunset schedules
  • Activity ideas

Focus on Connection

Choose someone whose style reflects your personality and relationship.

Authentic moments create the strongest images.

For couples planning a Florida elopement, my business Kindwave Photography specializes in capturing meaningful, intimate wedding experiences throughout Florida. Sample Florida Springs Elopement Timeline

Here’s an example of an 8-hour Florida springs elopement for inspiration. Starting earlier allows you to enjoy the crystal-clear water, avoid some crowds, and make the most of your time before the springs close.

8:00 AM – Getting Ready

Start your morning at a nearby cabin, Airbnb, or boutique hotel. Take your time getting ready, sharing coffee together, reading personal letters, or enjoying a quiet moment before the adventure begins.

9:30 AM – First Look Among the Cypress Trees

Meet for a private first look along a forest trail or beneath towering cypress trees. The morning light creates a beautiful setting and helps you ease into the day.

10:00 AM – Private Ceremony at the Springs

Exchange vows overlooking the crystal-clear water in a quiet location away from the busiest areas of the park.

11:00 AM – Canoe, Kayak, or Paddleboard Adventure

Spend an hour exploring the spring-fed waterways. This is a great way to experience the natural beauty that makes eloping in Florida so unique.

12:30 PM – Picnic Lunch

Take a break for a relaxed picnic or charcuterie spread in a shaded area near the water. Enjoy the scenery and soak in the excitement of the day.

1:30 PM – Explore the Springs

Wander the boardwalks, nature trails, and spring run while capturing candid moments together. The water will be crystal clear and beautiful when reflected by the sunlight!

2:00 PM – Portraits Around the Springs

After the ceremony, explore additional scenic locations for portraits. Take advantage of the vibrant blue water, lush greenery, and natural landscapes that make a Florida elopement so memorable.

3:30 PM – Celebration Toast & Cake Cutting

Share a champagne toast (where permitted) or enjoy a small wedding cake together before wrapping up your time at the springs.

4:00 PM – Exit the Park & Sunset Portrait Location

Head to a nearby open field, riverside location, or scenic overlook for golden-hour portraits. This gives you the best of both worlds: the springs during the day and dreamy sunset photos later in the evening.

5:00 PM – Romantic Dinner Celebration

Finish your elopement day with a private dinner at a local restaurant or waterfront venue, reflecting on the incredible adventure you’ve shared together.

Common Mistakes to Avoid When You Elope in Florida

Not Researching Permits

Some beaches, parks, and public locations require permits.

Always verify requirements before finalizing plans.

Ignoring Weather Patterns

Florida weather can change quickly. That 4PM rain can be no joke!

Always have a backup plan. When you work with me, we always have a Plan B for weather ready.

Waiting Too Long for Reservations

Popular locations book months in advance.

Reserve permits, accommodations, and vendors early. It is possible to still plan an epic day on shorter notice, but it requires guidance and knowledge. If you are eloping on a shorter timeline, contact me here and let’s start planning!

Underestimating Travel Time

Traffic and parking can affect your timeline.

Build extra time into your schedule, especially if traveling in between locations. When you work with me, we hop on a detailed planning call before your elopement, where we factor in these travel times and build a guideline you love for your day!

Focusing Only on the Ceremony

Many of the best Florida elopement experiences include activities such as:

  • Beach walks
  • Boat rides
  • Private picnics
  • Fine dining
  • State park adventures

Don’t miss out on creating something iconic. One of my favorite things to do for couples is personalize your experience. If you’re interested in a grand celebration on a boat, or a more intimate activity like playing classic arcade games together and recreating a first date, we’ll build experiences into your day that elevate your elopement into something truly special.

How to Make Your Florida Elopement Feel Special

Your day should reflect your relationship.

Consider adding:

Personal Vows

Custom vows often become the most memorable part of the ceremony.

Meaningful Activities

Choose activities you genuinely enjoy together.

Family Participation

Even if you’re eloping, loved ones can still be involved through:

  • Video calls
  • Letters
  • Small gatherings
  • Post-elopement celebrations

Multi-Day Experiences

Many couples turn their Florida elopement into an all-day or weekend adventure. This is what really elevates your elopement experience, and makes it all the more special.
